Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been rearrested by South African authorities just weeks after being acquitted of multiple rape charges that had drawn national attention.
The 66-year-old pastor of Jesus Dominion International was taken into custody early Saturday morning in East London, officials confirmed.
South Africa’s police service and the Department of Home Affairs jointly announced the arrest, though details surrounding the new charges remain undisclosed.
Omotoso, who has lived in South Africa for several years, was first arrested in 2017 at the Port Elizabeth Airport and initially faced 32 charges including rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking.
During the years-long trial, several women, some of whom were reportedly schoolgirls at the time of the alleged incidents, testified that Omotoso selected them from his congregation.
