Nigerians may end up spend over N6.74tn on calls in 2025 as telecom traffic remains high.
Telecom operators in Nigeria could generate over N6.74 trillion in revenue from calls in 2025 if call volumes remain steady, an analysis of the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reveals. However, the projection excludes the potential impact of free and discounted call promotions, which could affect the actual figures.
According to the NCC’s 2023 Subscriber/Network Performance Report, Nigerians spent approximately 408.5 billion minutes on local calls in 2023. Outgoing telephone traffic accounted for 205.3 billion minutes, while incoming traffic stood at 203.2 billion minutes. MTN recorded the highest outgoing and incoming traffic, with 122.67 billion and 123.76 billion minutes, respectively.
The projected revenue is based on current traffic levels and assumes no significant changes in call volumes or pricing. According to industry experts, the absence of fresh data for 2024 means this analysis relies on 2023 figures, which could vary by 2025.
Telecom operators have consistently benefited from Nigeria’s growing population and increasing dependence on mobile communication.
However, promotions and discounts, as well as evolving consumer habits like increased use of internet-based communication apps, could influence future call traffic and revenue.
