Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for boycotting Saturday’s local government election, calling the decision an act of cowardice fueled by fear of defeat.
Speaking after casting his vote at polling unit 5, Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa dismissed the PDP’s claim that the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) lacked credibility. He noted that the opposition party had actively participated in the electoral process up until its withdrawal.
“For the PDP to pull out, that is cowardice,” Aiyedatiwa stated. “They participated in the whole process; ODIEC released the timetable for the election. I don’t know the reason for that. Maybe it’s the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics, and other political parties are participating. Whatever reason they gave for withdrawing, I am not privy to it.”
However, the governor praised ODIEC for ensuring a smooth and transparent voting process, adding that the commission’s efforts demonstrated a commitment to fairness.
Recall that the PDP had earlier announced its decision to boycott the election, alleging a lack of trust in ODIEC’s ability to conduct free and credible polls. The party’s withdrawal has drawn criticism from several quarters, with political observers suggesting it could affect its standing in the state.
