As the world celebrates widows internationally, the governments of Oyo and Lagos states restated their dedication to improving the welfare of widows and addressing the challenges they face in society.

In Ibadan, the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Tamunominini Makinde, spoke on the resilience and courage of widows while pledging continued government support for their well-being. Represented by Bisi Oluranti, the lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North Constituency 1 at the Oyo State House of Assembly, Makinde described widows as some of society’s most vulnerable individuals.

She noted that widows often endure stigma, economic deprivation, and harmful traditional practices, with many being denied their rightful inheritance.

Speaking at a programme themed “Accelerating the Achievements of Gender Equality for Widows”, she called for collective action to remove the barriers that limit widows’ rights and access to resources.

Similarly, the Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to uplifting widows through various empowerment initiatives. At an event held at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre, officials highlighted ongoing efforts to provide widows with training, support services, and economic opportunities aimed at restoring their dignity and independence.

Both state governments mentionee that supporting widows is not only a matter of social justice but also a crucial step toward achieving gender equality and inclusive development.
