Pensioners in Oyo State have praised Governor Seyi Makinde for implementing an unprecedented increase in their pensions, positioning the state as the highest-paying for retirees in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, expressed their gratitude, stating that the recent upward adjustment has significantly improved the welfare of retired workers. The increase includes a minimum pension of N25,000 for the lowest-paid retirees and incorporates the 33 per cent pension raise of 2010, the 2019 consequential adjustment, a 20 per cent pension increment, and part of the N32,000 minimum wage.
The NUP South-West Zonal Council also commended Makinde’s decision in a letter signed by its chairman, Waidi Oloyede, and secretary, Sunday Akin. The letter described the move as a landmark achievement that has eased the financial burden on pensioners.
Speaking at a recent appreciation rally, Oyo State NUP Secretary, Olusegun Abatan, highlighted Governor Makinde’s track record of prioritizing pensioners’ welfare since 2019. He noted that the governor had cleared gratuities withheld for eight years and ensured timely payment of pensions on the 25th of every month.
With this latest review, pensioners said Oyo State has set a new standard for pension management, urging other states to follow Makinde’s example in supporting retirees.
