Following Governor Seyi Makinde’s warning about the influx of bandits fleeing military operations in the North-West into Oyo State, security agencies in the South-West have heightened measures to address the threat. Enhanced border patrols and increased collaboration between the police, Amotekun Corps, and the military have been rolled out to curb the menace.
An emergency meeting of Oyo State security chiefs was held on Tuesday evening to develop fresh strategies. Representatives from the military, police, and civil defence, alongside Governor Makinde’s security aides, attended the session to discuss actionable plans for countering the growing security concerns.
Makinde, during the 2025 inter-faith service on Monday, had raised the alarm, stating that bandits displaced by the military in the North-West were seeking refuge in Oyo State. He reassured residents that his administration was committed to flushing out the criminals and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Base Sociocultural Activities and Veterans’ Parley of the 655 Nigerian Air Force Station on Tuesday, the governor urged the military to intensify its fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in 2025. He explained the need for proactive efforts to address security threats that could hinder economic development.
Governor Makinde reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to supporting security agencies with the resources needed to combat insecurity.
“We want to charge the Nigerian military to intensify its efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, and other threats to peace and progress,” he said.
