Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have convened an emergency meeting today (Sunday) in Abuja, extending invitations to former governors, members of the party’s Board of Trustees, and ex-leaders of the National Assembly. Insiders say the move is a desperate attempt to stem the tide of defections and manage escalating internal tensions within the party.

According to information obtained by Sunday PUNCH, the expanded stakeholders’ meeting aims to chart a path forward as the party prepares for its upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the all-important National Elective Convention. These events are seen as make-or-break moments for the troubled opposition party.

A party source described the meeting as “expectedly tense,” revealing that the agenda includes discussions on how to unify the party’s fractured base and ensure a smoother leadership transition. “There is no doubt that the future of the PDP will largely depend on what happens at today’s gathering,” the source stated.

Recall that the PDP has been plagued by sustained internal crises since its poor showing in the 2023 general elections. The situation has been compounded by high-profile defections, leadership wrangling, and regional factionalism that continue to shake the party’s foundation.
