The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated dramatically, with rival factions within the party poised for a major showdown today in Abuja over the disputed position of National Secretary and the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Party insiders confirmed that two separate NEC and National Caucus meetings are being planned by opposing camps, each claiming legitimacy. The tension has left many party faithful uncertain about which meeting holds constitutional weight.
Recall that earlier, a faction led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum met at the PDP national secretariat in Wadata alongside embattled National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and other key NWC members. They resolved that instead of the scheduled NEC meeting, an expanded National Caucus meeting should be held.
This position was swiftly countered later in the evening by another bloc of the National Working Committee (NWC), which insisted that the NEC must proceed as planned. This group, led by Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, also includes National Vice Chairman (South East) Ali Odefa, National Woman Leader Amina Darasimi, acting National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo, and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, among others. They maintain that Koshoedo remains the rightful acting National Secretary.
A credible source within the party disclosed that the Board of Trustees (BoT) is also scheduled to meet today in a bid to mediate and prevent a full-scale implosion.
