Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended his recent comments on Nigeria’s economic challenges, dismissing Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s accusation that he is “demarketing” the country abroad.

The clash follows Obi’s speech at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., where he lamented Nigeria’s deepening poverty, insecurity, and governance issues.

Sanwo-Olu criticised the remarks as damaging to the country’s image and questioned Obi’s moral authority to speak on national challenges, citing his record as Anambra governor.

In response, Obi maintained that highlighting Nigeria’s problems is not unpatriotic but necessary for solutions. “We cannot fix what we refuse to acknowledge,” he said, insisting that leaders must tell the truth, especially when speaking to global audiences.

He dismissed claims that he contributed to poverty in Anambra, noting that his administration was praised for prudent financial management and investment in education and health. Obi reiterated his commitment to holding leaders accountable and promoting a Nigeria that works for all.
