The Oyo State Police Command has successfully rescued 84 Congolese nationals from the clutches of a human trafficking syndicate operating in Ibadan, the state capital.
The victims, who had been lured into Nigeria under the false promise of employment opportunities, were discovered in a building located in the Orogun area of the city, where they had allegedly been held captive for an unspecified period.
According to findings by Sunday PUNCH, the traffickers extorted large sums of money reportedly in US dollars from the victims’ families, exploiting their hopes for a better life.
The police are currently investigating the full extent of the operation, while efforts are underway to apprehend all those connected to the syndicate. Authorities have also assured that the victims will receive necessary care and support pending their safe return to their home country.
