The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis is battling pneumonia in both lungs, with new medical tests revealing further complications in the 88-year-old pontiff’s condition.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, February 18, the pope’s respiratory infection has progressed to asthmatic bronchitis, adding to concerns over his health.

“Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,” the Vatican said.

Despite the diagnosis, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reassured that Pope Francis remains in good spirits.

The pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday, February 14, after a weeklong bronchitis episode worsened. By Monday, February 17, doctors diagnosed him with a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, indicating a mix of viruses, bacteria, and possibly other organisms affecting his respiratory system.

Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having had the upper lobe of his right lung removed as a young man. His latest health setback is being closely monitored as medical teams work to manage the infection.
