The Presidency has strongly denied recent claims by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged support for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Lamido’s remarks as “a distortion of history and a regrettable attempt at revisionism.”

Recall that Lamido, while speaking on a live television recently, had alleged that President Tinubu only rose to prominence after the formation of the pro-democracy group NADECO and accused Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, of rallying market women in support of the annulment of the election believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

But Onanuga firmly rejected these assertions, calling them “patently false.”

“Let us set the record straight,” Onanuga said. “Alhaja Mogaji never mobilised market women to support the unjust annulment. Had she done so, she would have lost her position as market leader in Lagos. While she once had a personal relationship with then-President Babangida, this was before the annulment crisis.”

The Presidency further noted that Tinubu, as a Senator in 1993, was one of the loudest voices opposing the annulment and had to flee the country due to military persecution.
