The House of Representatives is currently reviewing a new bill that proposes strict penalties for individuals found guilty of offering or receiving bribes in Nigerian workplaces.
If passed into law, offenders could face up to seven years in prison or a fine of N5 million.
Titled ‘A Bill for an Act to Provide Effective Deterrence and Consequences for Bribery in Workplaces’, the proposed legislation aims to clamp down on corruption across both public and private sectors.
Sponsored by Paul Nnamchi, representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, alongside three co-sponsors, the bill targets bribery in government institutions, corporate bodies, NGOs, and other professional environments.
According to Nnamchi, workplace bribery not only undermines merit and productivity but also fuels systemic corruption that erodes public trust.
The bill is slated for further debate when the House reconvenes on June 17, 2025.
