Several Nigerian states have started regulating electricity within their jurisdictions.
This development comes after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) confirmed that seven states—Enugu, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Oyo, Edo, and Kogi have formally taken control of their electricity markets, in line with the Electricity Act 2023.
More states, including Lagos, Ogun, Niger, and Plateau, are expected to complete their transition between June and September. Anambra, which recently passed its electricity law, is also preparing to join the list.
Until now, electricity regulation in Nigeria was solely managed by the Federal Government through NERC. But with the enactment of the new Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, states now have the legal backing to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.
