The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) will engage the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Friday in a bid to reverse the recently approved 50% telecom tariff hike.
Subscribers are advocating for a more modest 10% increase, as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) signals its readiness for protests against the decision.
Recall that the Federal Government approved the hike, the first in over a decade, after operators initially requested a 100% adjustment. The increase is aimed at revitalizing the struggling telecom sector, which contributes approximately 14% to Nigeria’s economy. However, the decision has sparked widespread criticism and controversy.
However, president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero condemned the hike on Wednesday, calling it an additional burden on Nigerian workers who earn less than $50 monthly as a minimum wage.
“This increase is unfair and unacceptable. It adds to the suffering of workers who are already grappling with harsh economic realities,” Ajaero stated.
The NLC has warned of collective action, including a nationwide boycott of telecom services, to pressure the government and the NCC to reverse the decision.
Meanwhile, NATCOMS has threatened to file a lawsuit next week if Friday’s talks with the NCC fail to yield positive results.
