President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new governing council members for three federal universities: the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka.

This follows the February dissolution of UNIABUJA’s governing council and the controversial removal of its vice-chancellor, Aisha Maikudi, over questions regarding her eligibility.

In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the appointments are part of Tinubu’s ongoing reforms in the education sector aimed at strengthening university governance and academic excellence.

The newly constituted governing council of the University of Abuja features a diverse representation from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones:

Prof. Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan – South South

Dr. Adedeji Adefuye – South West

Prof. Sarki Abba Abdulkadir – North West

Prof. Aminu Mohammed Dukku – North East.

The President also filled vacant seats on the governing council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), appointing:

Rt. Hon. Barr. Ogbonna Eugene Odo – South East

Muhammad Inuwa Tahir, mni – North West

For Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, the new appointees are:

Dr. Nkem Okeke – South East

Dame Amina Patrick Yakowa – North West

The appointments reflect a regional balance and are expected to drive strategic reforms in institutional management and academic policy across the affected universities.

Recall that President Tinubu has repeatedly stressed the importance of education to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promising to reposition Nigeria’s tertiary institutions for global competitiveness.
