President Bola Tinubu and several state governors have condemned the brutal murder of 16 travellers by an irate mob in Uromi, Edo State, calling for swift justice for the victims.

In response to the horrific incident, President Tinubu ordered security agencies to launch a manhunt for the perpetrators while the governors echoed demands for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

The tragic event, which occurred in the Udune Efandion community, was reportedly triggered by mistaken identity. According to reports, the victims—who claimed to be hunters—were travelling in a Dangote Cement truck when they were stopped by local security personnel around 1:30 p.m.

Upon searching the vehicle, several dane guns were discovered, raising suspicion among the locals. The situation escalated quickly as a mob formed, leading to a violent attack on the travellers.

A disturbing video circulating on social media captured the gruesome scene. In the 29-second clip, the victims were heard pleading for their lives as they were beaten, and subsequently set ablaze by the enraged crowd.

The Edo State government has condemned the killings in strong terms, promising to work with security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations and civil society groups have also called for an independent investigation into the incident to prevent future occurrences.

President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the senseless loss of life and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

He warned against resorting to jungle justice, emphasizing that no one should take the law into their own hands.

“This heinous act is unacceptable in a civilized society,” the President’s statement read. “I have directed law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full weight of the law.”
