President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s ambition to lead artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in Africa, revealing plans to collaborate with Google to drive digital transformation. He disclosed this on his verified X handle after a strategic meeting with Google and Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai, in France.
The discussions with Pichai focused on advancing Nigeria’s role in AI and digital innovation. Tinubu emphasized that the country is ready to take bold steps in the tech sector, stating, “Nigeria is poised to take the lead in AI and technology, this is merely the start of an exciting journey.”
He also harped on the need for global partnerships to accelerate progress.
According to the President, Nigeria’s potential collaboration with Google will focus on five key areas: strengthening scalable cloud infrastructure, equipping the workforce with future-ready skills, fostering AI research and innovation, promoting cloud adoption, and positioning Nigeria as a major player in the global AI transition.
Tinubu also noted that Nigeria already boasts promising AI startups, such as Awarri Technologies, and stressed the importance of nurturing local talent. He believes that with the right investments and partnerships, Nigeria can emerge as a major AI hub, driving economic growth and technological advancement across the continent.
