U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted that recent military strikes “completely destroyed” Iran’s nuclear facilities, despite a leaked Pentagon intelligence report suggesting otherwise.
According to the Defense Intelligence Agency’s damage assessment, the strikes have only set back Iran’s nuclear programme by “a few months” rather than crippling it, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the operation Trump has publicly praised.
The airstrikes, launched days before a NATO summit in The Hague attended by Trump and other world leaders, were a response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. A fragile ceasefire between the two countries appears to be holding, with both sides confirming its existence. However, tensions remain high across the region.
From inside Iran, the BBC’s Lyse Doucet reports that daily life for many Iranians has changed dramatically in the wake of the conflict, with growing uncertainty about what lies ahead.
