U.S President Donald Trump is reportedly considering imposing visa restrictions on Nigeria and several other countries, mostly in Africa, as part of a renewed push to tighten U.S. immigration policies.
According to The Washington Post, the plan is detailed in an internal memo said to be signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The document lists 36 countries that could be added to a proposed visa ban if approved, citing concerns over national security and inadequate data-sharing mechanisms.
Countries on the proposed list include Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt, Cameroon, and South Africa, as well as non-African nations such as Syria, Cambodia, Bhutan, and several Caribbean and Pacific Island states.
U.S. officials reportedly argue that the targeted nations lack transparent governance and robust systems to properly vet travelers, thereby posing a potential risk to American security.
