The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to forging a balanced trade agreement with the United States but has asked the latter to show some respect. According to the EU, future negotiations must be rooted in mutual respect rather than intimidation.

The EU’s stance comes in response to a warning from US President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all European goods entering the US if re-elected.

Speaking after a call with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic underscored the bloc’s determination to pursue fair and respectful trade relations.

“The EU is fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both,” Sefcovic said. “EU-US trade is unmatched and must be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We stand ready to defend our interests.”

The EU and the US have long shared one of the world’s most significant economic partnerships. However, tensions have flared in recent years over tariffs, digital taxes, and climate policy.
