The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on the United States to reverse its decision to withdraw from the global health body. The plea comes in the wake of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, initiating the process for the US to exit the WHO.

In a statement on Tuesday, the UN Health body expressed deep regret over the move, stressing on the long-standing partnership between the US and the organisation.

“The US has been instrumental in shaping the WHO’s policies and governance since it became a member in 1948. Together, we have saved countless lives and protected people from global health threats,” the organisation said in the statement.

Recall that President Donald Trump’s executive order cited the organisation’s alleged mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, its failure to implement critical reforms, and its susceptibility to undue political influence from member states as reasons for the withdrawal.

Additionally, it criticized the financial contributions expected from the US, describing them as disproportionately high compared to those of other major nations like China.

Observers hope for a dialogue between the US and the WHO to resolve concerns and rebuild trust.
