Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has lashed out at former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent remarks on hunger in Nigeria, describing them as “politically motivated” and “insensitive.”
Wike made the statement during a media chat on Monday while responding to comments Amaechi made at his 60th birthday event. At the event, Amaechi had declared, “We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I’m. For us, the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him from this power.”
Reacting, Wike said it was “unfortunate” that Amaechi, who has held multiple high-ranking political offices over two decades, including speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor, and minister, would speak of hunger after just a few years out of power.
“He [Amaechi] has never lacked anything in the past 20 years,” Wike said. “To now use your 60th birthday celebration to talk about being hungry is not only laughable but also an insult to the millions of Nigerians truly suffering.”
Wike added that such a statement trivialises the real issues of poverty and economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
