Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed confidence that South Africa can secure a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket ahead of Nigeria—provided they defeat Benin Republic in their upcoming qualifier in Côte d’Ivoire on March 27, 2025.
Recall that Nigeria, South Africa, Lesotho, Benin Republic, and Zimbabwe are battling for a single qualification slot in Group C. Currently, South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin lead the group with seven points each, while Lesotho sits fourth with five points. Nigeria and Zimbabwe trail behind with three and two points, respectively.
The qualification race will heat up on March 17 when South Africa faces Lesotho, while Nigeria takes on Rwanda away from home. Three days later, the Bafana Bafana will travel to Abidjan to meet Benin Republic, the same day Nigeria hosts Zimbabwe in Uyo. Broos believes a victory over Benin will give his team a major advantage in the qualification race.
Speaking to South African publication OFM.co.za, Broos acknowledged the competitive nature of the group, emphasizing that while his team remains confident, they will not underestimate Benin. He noted that the Cheetahs are stronger than many anticipate and could pose a serious challenge.
