The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has stirred fresh debate over traditional supremacy in Yorubaland, declaring the Alaafin of Oyo as the most superior title among Yoruba monarchs.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the new Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade, to his palace in Iwo, Osun State, on Tuesday, the Oluwo stated emphatically: “I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to Alaafin.”
Speaking during the visit, Oba Owoade, accompanied by his wife, Olori Abiwumi, and other chiefs, said he came to the town to thank the Oluwo for attending his coronation ceremony in April.
The traditional ruler also said Oluwo called to congratulate him when his name was announced as the Alaafin-elect.
Oba Akanbi maintained that the Alaafin stool remains the original and supreme royal institution among descendants of Oduduwa, the revered progenitor of the Yoruba people.
