A sightseeing trip turned tragic on Thursday as a helicopter carrying a Spanish family of five plunged into the Hudson River in New York, killing all six people on board, including the pilot.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the fatalities, describing the incident as “deeply heartbreaking” and extending condolences to the victims’ loved ones.
Authorities have not officially released the names of the victims, but Spanish media and corporate sources have identified the family as Agustín Escobar and Mercè Camprubí Montal, both senior executives at Siemens, along with their children, aged four, five, and 11.
The crash, which reportedly occurred during a private aerial tour, is under investigation by aviation and safety authorities.
“Our hearts go out to the families,” Mayor Adams said, adding that support services are being made available for those affected.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the helicopter suddenly fell into the river, prompting emergency services to rush to the site.
